Our Plans
We're currently living in Phnom Penh (the
capital) and meeting with a small group of Christians and several
"seekers" in our home. Now we're spending most of our time studying the Khmer
language to enable us to speak the message of the Savior in the heart
language of the Khmer, but after our language training, we hope to
expand our ministry and begin an outreach program that focuses on the city's
large young adult population.
Our Objective
Our goal is to help build up an indigenous
body of believers in Cambodia who fulfill God’s plan for their lives in the
Church. Indigenous churches have three major qualities (see McGavaran's
Missions, pp182ff for further reading):
1. Self-governing We will endeavor to build churches that are mature
enough to make their own decisions.
2. Self-supporting We will endeavor to build churches that can
support themselves without becoming dependent on American funds.
3. Self-spreading We hope to train native Christians to assume
the responsibility of reaching out to those without Christ. We hope to
encourage them to develop their own vision and plan for reaching out to the lost
around them. Our aim here is to “work ourselves out of a job.”
We will also want to train Cambodian Christians to worship and conduct
themselves first, in harmony with God’s will, and second, in a manner that
fits into their culture. We don't want to import American problems or
traditions (things perhaps seen as "expedients" in our culture but which
fail to fit into theirs), but we will encourage complete submission to the
Lord and His unchanging Word as it applies in the context of the Cambodian
lifestyle.
